If you don’t know about bareroot plants, you’re missing out on one of the best bargains in gardening. Buying bareroot is a cost effective way to give you a jump start on the planting season.

What exactly are these plants? “Bareroot” essentially means that they are dormant and without a pot of soil around their roots. They are real and make sense for you as a grower.

Here are four reasons you should be buying bareroot plants:

  • Better Growth: Bareroot plants can take off quickly once they are replanted because their roots don’t have to transition from container soil to your local soil. They also come with a larger root mass and can potentially retain a greater portion of their original root system.
  • Easy Handling: Since they’re not weighed down by heavy soil, bareroot plants are lightweight. This makes it easier to handle and transport them and they are easier to carry and maneuver into place.
  • Helps the Environment: Buying trees and shrubs bareroot is environmentally friendly. With no plastic pots, these trees and shrubs result in less pollution and their lighter weight results in less fuel consumption during shipping. It’s a win/win situation!
  • Lower Prices: Bareroot plants cost less than potted plants! The savings comes from reduced freight and shipping costs, as well as the labor savings from not yet potting the trees.Peach Tree

Now that you are convinced on why you should buy bareroot here is some advice on how to plant and handle them:

  • Open the package and check to make sure the packing material around the roots is moist. If it feels dry, sprinkle it with water to moisten it, but don’t completely saturate it.
  •  For best results, plant within a day or two. If you need to delay planting for a few days, leave plants in their packaging and put them in a cool place. Keep the roots moist and do not allow the plants to freeze.
  • Remove the packing material from the roots. Then soak the roots in a bucket of water for about 30 to 60 minutes, no longer than two hours. Keep the roots moist before and during planting.
